2 Day Prince Edward Island Itinerary

We are not sure if our island is created by God when God hold a handful of soil and place it in the vast and rough Atlantic. We know that Prince Edward Island was first given the name “Abegweit” meaning the “the land cradled on the waves” by the indigenous aboriginal people here, the “Mi’Kmaq”. The island was discovered and shown to the world by Frenchman Jacques Cartier when he sailed through gulf of Saint Lawrence. When the British took the island over from the French who then called the island Ile Saint-Jean, they changed the name to the present Prince Edward Island, in honour of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of King George III

Prince Edward Island is the smallest province of Canada. The island is located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Surrounded by the ocean, it is pastoral with red soil, blue sky, black and white marked holsteins, ups and downs hilly meadows, silage rolls, potato fields, scattered communities etc. The idyllic sceneries attract millions of tourists here including Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge who spent their honeymoon here.

Day 1

We start the day by going to see the Confederation Bridge, the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water. With construction started in 1993, the bridge was officially opened in 1997. The toll bridge spans for 13 km(about 8 miles) and is still the one and only onshore link to the continent.  The entire bridge is built on 65 piers, and raised about 200 feet above sea level in order to let the boats pass. To reduce the impact of tides and winds, the bridge is designed curved and snaked. It is one of the most spectacular bridge in the world.

After seeing the bridge, we will head for Charlottetown, the capital city of Prince Edward Island, known as the cradle of the Canadian confederation. We will first visit the Province House National Historic Site, the birthplace of the confederation and seat of the provincial legislature.  In the afternoon we will explore the old town on a carriage excursion.  In the evening we will be sitting in the glamorous Confederation Arts Centre to appreciate “Anne of Green Gables”, the musical that no traveler to PEI should miss.

Day 2

After Breakfast we will proceed to Anne of Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish. The straw hat, red-haired braids and pinafore define Canada’s most loved fictional character, Anne of Green Gables, the image from Lucy Maud Montgomery 1908’s novel, followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character, with inspiration drawn from the farmstead and red soiled land on the island. At the heritage place we will meet the strong will orphan girl in her youthful escapades and mishaps within the memory-filled rooms of her home.

We will then visit a creamery tasting “Cows” the top ranking Canadian ice cream brand. “Cows”uses the finest ingredients only including fresh local dairy products and fruits.

Right after this we will find ourselves walking on the sandy beach of Cavendish, the western segment of Prince Edward National Park where deep blue sea meets the red cliffs. One can have a chance stepping onto an old lighthouse and imagining he is a lighthouse watcher a century back. The day will be happily ended by a lobster buffet dinner.
